The Ides of March

Yes, the middle of March already. The Ides mark the murder of Julius Caesar, but Gerd and I remember the 15th as the birthday of our mother even though neither of us can remember any kind of celebration or presents for her, poor Mother.  She died of cancer aged just 47.

Ducks heading out into the field last week.
The "cottage loaf" conifer on the left looks very brown - I must have trimmed it too severely.

The wild duck couple still come for food.
When I started to clear this area I found that the holly hedge had been chainsawed even more severely than I'd thought, the cut branches and trunks I pulled out filled the green bin and a large builders' bag.  I was told though that a new rhododendron had been ordered and would be delivered.

You can probably see in the photo on the right that I've started to fill that ugly gap.  I dug out two tall young trees from elsewhere in the garden and planted them against the fence, a cornus [red twigs in winter] and a cotoneaster [lovely little flowers and berries for the birds].  Yesterday I had a lovely shopping spree in my favourite nursery and arboretum, the Bluebell in Smisby, and treated myself to three trees and some groundcover:
This one, a sorbaria, I'll plant near the red-twigged cornus.

This cercis I planted where I dug out last year's Christmas tree.

The stone or umbrella pine will be a specimen
planted in the middle of my flower patch top right in this picture.

I was at the back of the fish pond yesterday afternoon trying to dig out a buddleia for replanting in the gaps of my hedge - it proved to be well established and I could not move it.  But when I turned round I could see my ducks having a lovely snooze in the sun, quite undisturbed by my activities:

The tree peony I planted a little while ago looks to be sprouting.

My "Hollywood" plum is showing lots more blossom in spite of the recent frosts,

and the gap where the little greenhouse was is getting covered over nicely.

PS, my second large blanket was finished and sent off to the Patch Family yesterday:
