Yesterday was a pretty nasty, rainy day and the first time the workmen had to "knock off" early, at four - there was no more they could do, the water was running off the stacked insulation pads on the lorry and they thought they'd better store them in the garage overnight.
I cleaned out the top hut in the rain and then let John put the duckies to bed before 5 as it was so dark. He reported back that they'd given him trouble, not wanting to come off the pond, and then he realized what the trouble was: a mallard drake was on the pond with them and they wouldn't come off the water until he'd flown off.
The same mallard drake - I presume - was there tonight when I did "bedtime", but he wouldn't take to the air, just tried to hide behind the reed island. It'll be interesting to see how long he'll hang around and whether he'll be joined by others as in years past.
The workmen got on with the insulation in the roof space and I only took three photos today:
