it's all getting better

Happy Valentine's Day to all who look in here today!

Annie, the poinsettia you sent us for Christmas is still looking sumptious [especially compared to the one I rescued from last year], thank you again, it gives me pleasure to look at every day.

A few days ago I said to John - very cheekily - if he was thinking of getting me a bunch of yellow roses for Valentine's Day [traditional for me in this household as I prefer them to red ones], would he consider instead getting me a new bay tree as the nasty bugs had killed my current one ............. and he did:

It's an absolute beauty, and is standing in the re-built conservatory at present until it gets a little warmer outside.

John said he had been looking forward to getting his single red rose plus vase delivered to the door as in previous years, but he liked the standard red rose and chocolates I gave him anyway:
The weather has been weird lately, changing from one day to the other, from snow to ice to rain and storms and snow again, rain again, snow again, bit of sun ..... cloudy and rain again.  A few recent views from the upstairs window:

Yesterday was atrocious, the forecast snow started as we were setting off for the Luncheon club at quarter to 11 and didn't stop all day, it was truly awful and the ducks came up before 5 volunteering to go to bed early.  Sitting in front of the fire last night we could hear the rain lashing against the windows, and this morning you had to step very carefully so as not to go base over apex in the mud!  But the sun actually came out this morning and four goldfinches visited the teasels:

I went to take pictures of the ducks who were enjoying life again after enduring constant snow showers yesterday.  On the way to the pond I could see many more mole hills - the little tykes have been active even when we had snow and ice.
Yes, we're back to very slippery mud wherever the ducks are active, and last night's heavy rain has filled a few hollows - there's hardly any snow left now:

It's been very peaceful in our duck community since the 7 drakes went to Derbyshire.  The arrows below point out our remaining four, Captain on the left, Ben on the right admiring his image in the water, and the two black boys [with emerald shimmer now] in the middle.

I've inserted a picture of Honey into the middle foreground here to show how she only slightly differs from Caramel behind left.  Honey seems to have made a complete recovery - like I said in the title, it's all getting better, even the weather [for now, anyway!].

Last Thursday 7th February [niece Brigitte's birthday] was a very cold but bright day for our walk with the Moira group.  There were just 8 of us [Brenda and Paul are on a cruise] and we went around the Conkers Circuit.  Here are some photos from it; I particularly loved the memorial garden created for Diana, Princess of Wales.  The archway was designed by children in local schools and will be planted with climbing roses.

Almost back at the "Conkers" car park I saw this great mining sculpture - and a "mackerel sky"!
