tragedy already

1 of the little escapees of this morning is dead, drowned in the bowl of food and water I'd put into the hut for the 2 mothers as they wouldn't come out at all.  I really thought the walls of the bowl were much to high to climb in, I'm heartbroken again after all that joy.

I'd gone out with the camera this pleasant evening to see if there were any more developments, both Gertie and Billie-Jean seemed very agitated and threatened me.  When I opened the door I could see only 3 little ones, and then saw the little white one floating in the bowl.  If only I'd gone out a bit sooner -  I took the bowl out, of course.  Don't know if there'll be any more hatching, the eggs looked a bit scattered.

This is the bowl,
in the picture  above you can just see it at the back on the right - I never thought the little ones could reach that high, how wrong I was.

  1. Mutti that is so sad. You mustn't blame yourself these little creatures are existing against all odds in the runner duck world. If you hadnt been so attentive it would have happened already in the pond - you can't anticipate every possible disaster. It is very sad though and I send you a big hug . Please don't beat yourself up about it though ! Lots of love xxxx

  2. Like Annie says Mum, don't get down over what is fundamentally just nature at work. In the wild there is a very high attrition rate which is why there are so many ducklings born.
