Can somebody explain duck behaviour to me!  Normally their plan of action is to take the quickest route to the big pond, whereas today ..... they spent all day in and around the smallest pond up here.  I had forgotten to open the gate at the back which is on their direct path to the lower pond.  At about 9 o'clock I could see the four from the bottom picking their way over this rubble in front of the garage
so as to get to the food container.  And then, instead of returning quickly as usual, they ran through the front gate to join their nine mates at the top.  All of them stopped there together the whole day, one or another would come out to feed, but then ran straight back to the little pond.  They are are still there now, at quarter to five              -               it could get interesting in a short while when I try and shut them into the hut!

Well, we did have fun and games, but after three attempts the 9 stayed in their hut and were shut in, and Captain and his 3 girls trotted off to their hut.  I had tried to drive them into the same hut up top but they absolutely refused after the fashion "that's not our home and we will not go in there!"

The four water containers down by the duck pond looked amazingly clean, not having been used all day, and the single bucket by the little pond was very muddy.

We were out for our monthly walk with the Moira crowd yesterday, and when we came back the builders had made amazing progress.  By the time I got around to taking photographs it was rather dark:

But this morning it was easier to see what had been done:

When the workmen left for the weekend we could see the walls through the upstairs window:

We reckon we'll have the roof on early next week!

  1. Wow Mutti they have made amazing progress. The transformation is incredible. This looks traditional to me rather than straw bales.. was that option too expensive?

  3. Well, you made it, anyway! Strawbale building was never considered by John, although I still rate it highly. The company I wanted to employ is building social housing in North Kesteven: http://www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/section.asp?catId=1522 , and there are lots of U-Tube videos on the subject if you have time to take a look. Would have been cheaper, I reckon, but not many companies build with straw - yet!
