I saw this mummy pheasant and her single chick on 15th August, a lovely sight, and then I wondered what might have happened to her other chicks ....
There are still lovely roses around the house,
and next door's rabbit has reappeared in our garden. I had to laugh out loud that day, a bunch of our ducks and drakes alerted me by standing bolt upright and staring in one directions, and then I saw that it was the rabbit that had scared them. When it hopped towards them they turned as one and fled away flapping in panic - big brave ducks!
On Sunday 24th I thought I would cook us a couple of cobs of sweetcorn, I had seen brown tassels on them from a distance, meaning they were ready to harvest. I was greeted by this scene of devastation:
Only 8 out of this lot of cobs hadn't been pecked - and then I remembered how on several evenings recently, when I'd been calling for the ducks to come in at bedtime, I'd seen them gathered at the edge of this bed ..... Surely they haven't got enough brains to break into the cobs of sweetcorn, it must have been the pigeons that showed them how!
We had some really heavy rain on several days:
