On Monday afternoon I thought I'd lost all ducks. I have a pretty good view from the windows upstairs and I could see plenty pheasants, but not a single duck.
Armed with the camera I went out to find them - they were in the ditch! No snow in there, plenty of water and mud, paradise for ducks!

Having been discovered they obviously thought they shouldn't be there and got out to troop uphill ....

...... where they continued widening the tracks the JCB had made:
Captain and his two girls were not among this crowd, but they had obviously been there before and were taking a rest in their home ground [yes, Candida used to be white!]:

I should have got suspicious on Monday morning when I could see the whole bunch of them very busy NEAR the ditch, below the compost bin:
How come the boys look so much cleaner than the girls? I would have thought it should be the other way about!

I cleaned out all three huts on Monday afternoon, and while I was doing the bottom one I suddenly saw Jay-Z and Ben come racing and shouting from the heather island area ..... they had lost the connection to the rest of them who were on their way to the ditch again:
It's been very, very cold all week, but during the days the sun has come out now and again and helped the snow recede from "busy" areas. The attraction of the muddy ditch has continued to be irresistible to the ducks, whenever I can see Candi - and maybe Anke and Captain too - 'working' in the JCB tracks then I know all the others will be in the ditch.
And here is the proof that our other white duck, Daisy, is no close second to Candi for the prize of dirtiest duck:

The scene from the window early this morning looked like this - you can see where East is by the first weak rays of the sun!
John's suspicions last night that 6 had gone into Captain's hut instead of the normal 3 were proved right this morning, among the "extras" were Honey and her friend Purdy, who no doubt wanted to save themselves the troublesome walk back through the snow last night ..
