After two days of busy preparations everything was ready and set out on the table by 5pm - hard to believe as I'm usually late. Of course, as luck would have it, all guests arrived late by an hour or more.....
Friends Pat and Graham had paid John a pre-birthday visit on Tuesday evening, and while talking about the proposed party on Friday we naturally invited them to it. John fancied a game of rounders in the field weather permitting, but mentioned that he couldn't find his rounders bat. "No problem", said Graham [who has his own workshop and lathe], "I'll make you one!" So he did, and turned up last night with a beautifully turned mahogany bat.
After everyone had finished eating we found a ball and went off into the field, it must have been close to 8 o' clock already. Upturned large flower pots marked the four stations and play began, girls batting and boys fielding. Julie hit the ball into tall nettled, but we managed to find some more balls in the garage. I never played rounders at school and proved absolutely useless, so I went back to the house and made tea and coffee for the players.
On the way back to the field I finally remembered to take a photos of the wisteria which, planted facing West against the garage, is flowering late but beautifully:

The games were in full swing, here are just three of the photos I took:
CAUGHT BEHIND! Andy, front left, did a great catch off Carl's ball.
It was almost 9 now, so on the way back to the house we jointly put the 3 groups of ducks to bed - causing something of a panic among the 13 with all those 'strange' people. Then it was finally time to light the candles on John's lemon birthday cake and share it out along with the chocolate fudge cake:
