I'm running behind ....

.... with my entries, sorry if you've been looking and found nothing new.  I'll try and make amends.

Yesterday morning we spent our coffee break on the steps to the frog pond.  Now and again we'd throw tidbits to the little big ones [or big little ones], a few flakes out of my breakfast Muesli, the odd grape [John has been very successful with the black grapes in the greenhouse] and a few little pieces of wholemeal bread.  The latter was not very popular, they're not really used to bread, but later, when I fetched a load of tomatoes for our lunch and threw them a few over-ripe ones, THAT created huge enthusiasm!

So, while watching them from the steps we discussed yet again which ones were boys and which ones girls.  I'd already written to friends Micha and Pine on 12.8. that I'd seen and heard 'Bertie' quacking very clearly, several times, right in front of me, so she IS a 'Gertie' after all [sorry, Annie, meant to tell you].  I'd also seen and heard one of the first two "drakes" out of the eggs quacking, one of these two:

On the other hand, "Dess" or "Tess" came very close to me at the edge of the pond and I'm sure 'she' made drake noises, so green beak does not necessarily equates to duck.  What's more, I thought HJ's quacking wasn't all that clear any more - who knows whether the ratio will stay at 5:5 or will become 6:4 in the end, we'll just have to wait and see.

Enough words written, here are some photos:
 'Praline' and 'Boy'

Tuts, Bless [or Bess] and HJ.

Marked with an arrow on this one is Gertie and left of her the 'newly found' duck I thought was a drake.

I must take some close-up shots of the two black ones, drakes, I'm just about sure.  There's a lovely green sheen to their feathers now.
