Sitting down yesterday afternoon with a well-earned cup of coffee after our luncheon duty and keeping the 10 little big ones in view from the sun lounge they suddenly stood up bolt upright, all but 2 of them looking in the same direction, towards the garage door. The car was hiding what they were looking at, we hadn't noticed a pheasant or other bird or a cat coming up. Then I saw movement, a medium-sized rat running over the plastic sacks [containing the stones I'd dug out to sink their blue bath into the ground] and disappearing behind the wood stack. And then there was another one running from the garage under the duck shed. ALARM! John rushed out and chased the one under the duck hut away.
I was trying to finish my cup of coffee before going out, but just a minute later saw another young rat - or one of the two from before again - running to and fro between cherry tree and duck shed. Coffee goodbye, I threw a stone under the hut hoping to hit the vermin, and then started the afternoon's work of clearing an area behind the wood stack to remove any cover for the beasts. And the rat traps are going to come into action again! We didn't see any more of the rodents for the rest of the day.
For part of their supper the ducklings had spaghetti for the second time, and they got to grips with them like old pros. Which reminds me that last Friday, 15th, before the rainy weather started, they had spaghetti for the first time and I neglected to put pictures in here. I'll put some in now!

Annie, do you remember what you said about the areas in the garden near the ducklings would be the best weeded? Too right! Did you notice the stack waiting to be carted away in the background?
